4OTC Podcast - Episode 9

This week we really do have 4 on our couch! We were lucky to have Frank join us for Episode 9, sharing his unique perspective as a parent with three students in a youth program. He satisfies our curiosity - and hopefully yours! - on what sort of characteristics parents like to see in youth leaders, what sorts of communication they appreciate, and the impact leadership turnover can have on students … among other topics!
This week’s EGADIdeas Game o’ the Week is The Toaster of Destiny, a creative, hilarious, and potentially gross game of get-to-know-you!

Very good podcast! It highlighted another difference between our Youth Group and many others. We come from a small Church (about 100 members) and have a small Youth Group - only about 10 - 12 in total, average attendence about 6-8 on any given night. The only way we can make Youth Group happen is to have parents leading the group. Our kids are not overly thrilled with having their parents as leaders, but we just can’t afford a full time Youth Minister. We did have our Pastor do one session without parents there when a sensitive topic was discussed, but for the most part it is parent led. Are there things we can do to minimize the problems this creates? We do have a good open relationship with our kids, but I realize this still can cause issues. I agree with your discussion which indicated kids do need “space” sometimes. Some of us listeners are very interested and motivated amateurs, not professional Youth Ministers. That is why I appreciate this podcast so much, and the Egad Ideas web site!

“Kitschy” is actually a Yiddish word in the beginning I think. Basically it’s used to mean “quirky & catchy”. I’ve already forgotten the context it was used in though.
